Fake Crypto Platforms Are Getting Smarter

ASIC has warned Australians about a growing scam involving fake crypto-asset trading platforms promoted through “share trading” and “stock tips” messaging groups.

These scams often look polished. Victims are invited into online groups, shown trading tips, and directed to what appears to be a legitimate crypto trading platform. The platform may show fake profits, fake trades and a professional-looking dashboard.

But ASIC’s warning is clear: there is no real trading. The platform data is fake, and money deposited by victims goes directly to the scammers.

Some victims are then asked to pay extra fees to release their funds or withdraw profits. Those fees also go to the scammers, and no assets are released.

The scam is designed to look credible

The problem is not just that scammers are becoming more active. It is that the scams are becoming more convincing.

Many fake platforms now use professional websites, messaging groups, fake investment advice, artificial trading results and pressure tactics. By the time a victim realises something is wrong, funds may have already moved through multiple wallets, exchanges or offshore accounts.

That is why early action matters.

For anyone affected by a crypto scam, the first step is not panic. It is preservation.

Victims should keep records of messages, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, platform names, screenshots, emails, phone numbers, bank transfers and any communication with the scammers.
