Australia’s AI Rules Are Starting to Take Shape
Australia’s AI policy is moving from broad guidance to clearer standards.
On 15 July 2026, the Australian Government announced plans for a new AI framework built around Australian Standards for AI. The aim is to make sure AI development, investment and infrastructure operate in Australia’s national interest.
A major focus is large data centres and AI training infrastructure. The proposed standards are expected to create clearer rules around energy supply, grid connection costs, water efficiency, demand flexibility and where large data centres should be built.
The Government has also announced the creation of an Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to help coordinate implementation nationally. The framework is expected to be considered by National Cabinet in August, with legislation anticipated next year.
The announcement also puts copyright and creative rights firmly into the AI conversation. The Government has said Australian writers, artists, journalists and media should retain control over how their work is used, including where content is used to train AI systems. This is an important shift!
AI governance is no longer just about staff using ChatGPT or having an internal AI policy. It is becoming a broader business issue involving infrastructure, data, copyright, energy, consumer safety, suppliers and regulatory readiness.
For businesses, the message is clear: AI adoption should not be treated as informal experimentation. Organisations need to understand where AI is being used, what risks it creates, who is accountable, and whether the right controls are in place.
That does not mean overcomplicating things. It means starting with practical governance that fits the business.
